...identification of Bromeliad species

The Bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) is the largest plant family that is endemic to the "New World" - although there is a single species found in Africa and so this claim can be disputed. There are over 3000 known species of Bromeliads and these are further divided into 3 subfamilies:

Many of the Bromeliad species are epiphytic - meaning they live in trees, but this should not be confused with parasitic plants which take nutrients from the host they live on. Bromeliads only live on the trees, they do not take nutrients from them.

Many Bromeliads grow in a rosette shape and have a "cup-like" center which holds water. This is often used by insects and amphibians for laying eggs or drinking.
